BE PREPARED to pay about $3000 if you want just a handful of the most popular Windows programs - top-shelf software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop, Nero 7 and a decent security suite.
Of course, if you had that much money to spend, you'd probably invest in a top-grade PC with everything that opens and shuts.
Here's the quandary. If you have just bought a new PC for that much, you probably won't be splashing out another few thousand dollars on software. Nor will you be going on a software shopping spree if you're still using a PC from a few years back, because you're saving for a new system or because you've inherited a hand-me-down machine when someone else has upgraded.
Here's the answer: free software, also known as freeware. Yes, you read it correctly - programs that don't cost a cent yet meet all your basic needs (and then some) and are just as good as their expensive heavyweight counterparts
